Hi all, I had something weird happen today and wanted to see if anyone else has seen the issue, or knows of something I should look at. I see other posts on XPS machines or maybe one post on a alienware 14, but nothing specifically on the 18. I have only had the 18 for about 3 months now.
My 18 serves as a work pc before play in most cases. I normally have 2 or 3 VM's running at the same time on it. I say this to say, it is rarely if ever on battery. Today was no different. Booted up and proceeded to launch my VM's and get to work. After a couple hours or so, I noticed that the main display went in dim mode. I looked at the power icon and sure enough it was showing the battery down around 27% I think it was. Then a few moments later my usb's went dead. This was the first weird thing. My advanced power settings are set to leave on if plugged in, but not if on battery. As I was looking at power settings and I even unplugged the power adapter and plugged it back in, I noticed the battery was dropping fast. And sure enough I got the warnings it was going to shutdown and did. So it completely thought it was running off the battery when in fact it was plugged in and has been for weeks. Rebooted and the bios stated that the battery had been disabled and to remove power, allow the "unit" to cool and try again. Well the laptop isn't running hot, I'm not overclocking at the moment, fans are running fine. I'm thinking the battery could be hot? I didn't take the time to find a screw driver. I waited a few minutes and rebooted again. Same message. So while it was setting there in bios I started googleing off of my phone and after a few searches later when I glanced back, the bios had changed its message that the battery was normal. I rebooted and the battery is currently charging. So obviously my worry is the battery its self, I can't have the laptop just randomly think its running off the battery and kill itself. I read something about the dell desktop mode charging having some issues, but not this specifically. I went ahead and disabled it just to see. The battery seems to be charging slow, but again with this machine being new to me, I'm not sure what is a normal charge time for it.
Any thoughts or help is appreciated.
