I have an Alienware Area 51 that I would say is 4 or so years old. I am a fairly techy guy but I am having a problem that is driving me nuts and I can't figure it out. About 2 or 3 weeks ago I discovered that anytime I put blank media into one of the optical drives the computer locks up. The computer will also not boot with blank media in the drive. I have no idea how long this had been happening since I don't burn a lot of discs. I tried everything I could think of and every tool I had to try to fix this to no avail. Finally, I bit the bullet and just completely re installed Windows 7. Everything seemed to be ok again at that point. Well, a few days later here we are again and it is doing the exact same thing. I don't have any software loaded that I would consider sketchy. For that matter, I really don't have much loaded at all right now. I have tried MB, MS Security Essentials, and CCleaner and nothing seems to fix this issue. Does anyone have a clue as to what could be going on?
