Updated ATI drivers

I was wondering if Dell/Alienware has released updated ATI drivers. The drivers suggested on the website are at version 9.x and I believe ATI's current version is around 15.

I did a search and the last topic about this is over a year old, and was unanswered. Since Alienware laptops seem incompatible with ATI's standard mobility drivers, I'm hoping that I've missed something on the website and Dell/Alienware has updated drivers stashed somewhere.

My system is an m17x from 2011 using an AMD 6990M video card.

Upgrading HELP on my M.1 primary SDD

I just purchased the Alienware 15 with a 250ssd M.1 and a 1tb slave but One Drive and Drop Box must install on the C (primary) drive leaving my primary drive full.

I would like to purchase an Transcend MTS600 - Solid state drive - 512 GB and install it on my M.2 slot and later transfer to my M.1 to make this my primary drive and format the original 250SSD and install in my M.2 slot

Can this be done??

Any recommendations on cloning software?

Need help with performance, temperatures, and screen replacement.

First off I'd like to start by saying I've already used my warranty to repair my power socket. My laptop ran so hot it melted the entire plastic piece that I plug the charger into.

My number one concern is my temperature. Right now even if I play older games my laptop runs so hot it automatically shuts off. I've read that the m14x does run pretty hot but is that normal? It runs 65-70c on idle, and heats up to the point that it shuts down when I run games.

Secondly, around the time it started over heating and shutting down I noticed the performance slowed way down. I used to be loading games like skyrim on ultra high instantly and it has gotten progressively worse

thirdly I would like information about replacing my screen, It has a small crack that really isn't that big of a deal (Doesn't get in the way really) but I still need to get it fixed.

I'm not really sure how to diagnose my problems or get specs or anything like that so bear with me.

Here is my dxdiag (if it helps)

Hi,

I need a technician to come out and assist me with my Aurora R4 ALX or alternatively i need it sending in for a diagnosis and possible repair. How can i do this please?

Cannot use integrated Mic or Webcam

I know this a problem with the hardware, not the software. My Alienware 17 laptop picks up the mic saying it is working fine, but it won't pick up any sound. Same with webcam. I've read that maybe the wires are caught on something and i need to put the wires back in their places so that the computer can pick them up again. How would i go about doing so?

Upgrade to a GTX970 on my R-4

I’ve been having issues with my R-4 graphics, which are GTX 690’s in SLI. They won’t take driver updates, and Windows keeps shutting them down, with error messages that say there is a “hardware problem” . Tried re-seating the card, and innumerable hours in chat and email with NVidia hasn’t brought a solution, and I’ve decided to replace the aging 690’s with the GTX970 (single card for now). See any compatibility issues with doing this? The 690’s are three years old, and that seems to be about the limit for the Chinese junk that we’re forced to use.

System is Win 7 64-bit SP1, Intel i7 3939K@3.20 GHz Sandy Bridge-E 32nm, 16GB DDR3 RAM@799MHz, MB is Alienware 07JNH0.

I’m open to suggestions as to any other card that might do the job, but it needs to be in the $350 ballpark I can get the 970 for. Thanks for any comments.

Need help with extremely low FPS rates on new X51 R2

$

I just purchased a new Alienware X51 R2 to replace an older model Alienware with a Radeon card that I bought in 2012. My old machine did a serviceable job running games, and I was getting about 30 FPS on Grand Theft Auto 5 running at (mostly) high settings with 1440 X 900 resolution. For most games, I could play on normal settings and get 30+ FPS, and I was happy with it. Not so with the new X51 R2 I purchased.

I noticed almost immediately that my FPS with GTA V was extremely low. When I start up a game (at 1920 X 1080 with Normal settings), the FPS is around 120 and the game plays smooth as butter, but as soon as I start moving it begins to drop until it's in the 15-20 range. Getting into a car is even worse, with FPS readings between 5 and 10, and at that rate it's impossible to play. The problem seems to occur no matter what resolution I run the game at or if I push the graphic settings to the lowest available.

I figured it was a driver issue, so I uninstalled all NVIDIA software and drivers and did a clean install of the drivers, but that didn't help. I then started downloading and testing some of the other games I have to see what my FPS looks like with them. Note that I tested each game by first letting the game choose the graphics setting, then I tested it again on the lowest settings at 1920 X 1080 and 1440 X 900.

  • Skyrim on old PC: 40 FPS and smooth at 1600 X 900
  • Skyrim w/ default setting: 8-12 FPS and lots of stuttering and lag
  • Skyrim @ 1920 X 1080: 12-15 FPS with less stuttering but with terrible mouse and keyboard lag.
  • Skyrim @ 1440 X 900: same as at 1080

  • RAGE on old PC: 50-60 FPS and smooth at 1600 X 900
  • RAGE w/ default settings: 25-35 FPS, but ran pretty smooth.
  • RAGE @ 1920 X 1080 and 1440 X 900 : runs the same as the default settings

  • CoD4MW on old PC: 50-60 FPS and smooth at 1600 X 900
  • CoD4MW w/ default settings: 10-15 FPS and a lot of stutter
  • CoD4MW @ 1920 and 1440: 10-15 FPS and a lot of stutter

  • Civilizations 5 on old PC: 40-50 FPS and smooth at 1600 X 900
  • Civ5 on default settings: starts at ~35 FPS and drops until it's under 20. Game play is fairly smooth as long as I'm not scrolling the map.
  • Civ5 on 1920 X 1080: like with default settings, starts at ~ 35 FPS and starts dropping immediately.
  • Civ5 on 1440 X 900: much better in that it starts at 60 FPS, but like the others, begins dropping after a few minutes, just not as far. It bottoms out in the lower twenties.

  • Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 on the old PC: 90+ FPS at the highest settings (game came out like 10 years ago)
  • Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 at 1600 X 900: 50-60 FPS and pretty smooth.

  • Dead Island on old PC: 40-50 FPS and smooth at 1600 X 900
  • Dead Island at 1920 X 1080: 5-10 FPS and lots of stuttering and mouse/keyboard lag.
  • Dead Island at 1440 X 900: 10-15 FPS and stuttering with some mouse lag.

Here's a list of some of the things I've tried:

  1. Downloaded FRAPS and used it instead of the built-in FPS tool w/ Steam. The FRAPS readouts matched the Steam readout.
  2. Wiped away the old NVIDIA drivers/software and did a clean install of the driver only.
  3. Turned off VSync and tried the Adaptive VSync; neither helped.
  4. I purchased a Roccat keyboard and mouse and wondered if they were part of the problem, so I uninstalled them and used a plain Microsoft keyboard and mouse. Didn't help.
  5. Set the game executables to Highest priority in task manager. No good.
  6. Watched CPU usage, memory usage, and disk IO while playing to see if I'm having any hardware bottlenecks. CPU usage never got above 20%. Memory usage never got above 37%. Disk IO never got above 10% after the initial load.

System Specs:

  • Alienware X51 R2
  • Windows 8.1
  • CPU: 4 core Intel i7 4790 @ 4000 MHz
  • RAM: 16 Gb DDR3
  • Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960 w/ 2 Gb memory
  • HDD: 7200 RPM Toshiba DT01ACA200

I'm pulling my hair out trying to figure out how I can resolve the issue. This is the first time I've owned a GeForce card (always had ATI Radeons in the past), and I'm starting to question that decision. The only game I've been able to get decent framerates on is 10+ years old, and it's pretty frustrating.

Anyone have any idea what else I can do to move towards a resolution?

X51R2 graphics card upgrade

Hey I bought a new x51r2 thats i5-4460 6mb cache and 3.4ghz. It runs on a gtx 750Ti 2GB GDDR5. Im wondering if this can pull of games such as league of legends, payday2 and stuff like that. However the problem is Im probably gona look for games that need a good graphics card and I know lots who use a 970 on x51r2. Is there anything I should watch out for while doing this? I think I have a 330psu and should I buy one with 2 fans or 1 and what do I do with the driver on the pc before upgrading it and what to do after upgrading it. Should I need to install new drivers or will a cd come with the graphics card? Thank you

8 Week Old £2000 Alienware R2 17" Completely Useless/Broken and Alienware/Dell Don't Care...

The situation :- I have purchased an Alienware R2 17" with top spec mid April 2015, with 16gb ram, Iq4980 processor, 256gb SSD drive etc at around £2000.

Basically since day one the system has not worked properly. I suffered from the throttling issue with the insufficient power from the 180w PSU. That is not the big issue.

I have consistently suffered with blue screening, I first reported these issues on 22/4/2015 and expected a new PSU would fix the problems. It didn't. Every single time I load a game and the system becomes under load it just blue screens and shuts down within 2-3 minutes. After restoring windows numerous times, doing various diagnostics, 6 weeks later finally a repair was organised where my motherboard was replaced.

Since the motherboard has been replaced the blue screening happens at ANY time, during start up, just on the desktop, browsing the Internet, you cannot even keep the laptop started up for more than 2 minutes without it shutting down and blue screening.

For me, Alienware was a brand that I thought were good. I thought their laptops were excellent. I spent so much money buying a top of the range model, and it has NEVER worked as it should do. I have never had such a bad customer service experience with any company.

The resolution I want from Dell/Alienware is just a replacement machine, I don't even want a refund, just a replacement machine as I have given them a chance to repair the machine and it has come back WORSE than before. I have completely lot confidence in them. I need the laptop for every day use for work most importantly and gaming secondly, and now I can't even use the Internet or use Microsoft Word. It is a useless brick. I cannot accept a 2nd repair as who knows, it might not even turn on when I get it back this time.

I am now at the stage where I can get no response from Dell/Alienware customer service, I still have never spoken with a manager from Dell/Alienware as the technical support point blank refuse to put me through to them ever, and now I have a useless machine. It is not unreasonable to have the laptop swapped for the same model, one that works.

What can I do? At this stage, I would never ever ever recommend buying an Alienware laptop due to the terrible quality and experience I have had so far.

And Dell/Alienware won't approve my forum post. This is censorship.

Basically, in my honest opinion, never buy a Dell/Alienware laptop. It is the worst decision I have ever made, and now I am left with a £2000 brick that is useless. Cannot even turn it on for more than 1 minute or a bluescreen appears.

Hello,

I would like to know if there is support for windows 10 if I were to upgrade, and if my system which is running windows 7 would work if I were to up date to windows 10?

I checked the drivers section for updates to BIOS but they are very dated.

Any help would be most welcome, I am sure there are a few others out there with these systems?

Alienware 14 shuts down randomly but only with AC adapter plugged it. Works fine on battery

I'm facing this weird problem where my alienware 14 abruptly shuts down while rendering scenes in my 3d modelling program, but this happens only when the AC adapter is plugged in. When i am running on the battery and trying to render the same scenes, they work flawlessly without any glitches. I can't get my head around the issue. My gpu temperatues for the intel HD 4600 fluctuates pretty rapidly in the range of 60-90 degree sometimes while the NVIDIA GT 750m shows steady around 60 degrees.

Network controller problems.

In the process of reinstalling several drivers due to BSODs, I accidently deleted a network driver. I can not access my internet without an ethernet cable.

I do not have any previous System Restore points, and when i try to scan the internet for the driver with the option in Device Manager, it states that it can not find anything.

The Drivers on the Dell page do not seem to fix this problem.

My laptop is an Alienware M17x r4.

Any help would be appreciated.
